Burn Baby, Burn!
Today I got out of 3 hours of work and 1 history class because "SMU Explosion 2005" as I am sure the throngs of media will dub it."At about 1 p.m. today, an explosion occurred in a first floor organic chemistry lab. Ten students were injured, five of whom were transported to OlympiaÂs St. Peter Hospital for treatment of lacerations. None of the injuries are life-threatening. The explosion occurred during a demonstration comparing evaporation of gas in a combustion reaction. A large glass bottle, apparently filled with ethanol, exploded when it was lit, shattering the bottle. About 34 students were in the class, along with the professor and a laboratory assistant."* Meanwhile students and staff alike wandered aimlessly on thegrassyy lawns outside Old Main and enjoyed an unexpected afternoon in the sun on one of Washington's last summer days.
