I was fixated on a beautiful piece today at the art museum, when my attention was pulled away by a bouncing little boy about two feet to my right. I'm guessing he was about five. He was jumping up and down, pointing at me excitedly with one hand, and shaking his father's arm with the other. I still can't speak Japanese, but from the body language, context, and few words I could pick out - I knew that the little tyke was just thrilled to be looking at an American. "How strange - a real, live person with blue eyes, white skin, blonde curly hair - right in front of your very eyes! Can you believe it! Golly!" I smiled at him, "konichiwa." And he was in hog's heaven. Nodding that the father and moving on I just thought to myself "which side of the glass do I belong on - am I a person, or a sight to see?"
